The Pen and the Sword (PEN Can.)

9 Apr 2010 03:00 pm

Invited Authors: Jeffrey Moore (Prisoner in a Red Rose Chain) and Camilla Gibb (Sweetness in the Belly)

What about our memories holds us back? What part of our memories guide us forward? This event takes a look at the role of memories, of the forgotten and the lived, through writer commentaries and a special performance by Capoeira Sul da Bahia.

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial developed by African and Native slaves over 400 years ago as a means of fighting their oppressors. A short video presentation will be followed by a demonstration, and a workshop, in which the audience will be able to play the instruments, ask questions and learn some basic movements. Presentation in English and Portuguese. Bilingual question period.

Cost: $5 students ($20 All-access festival pass) / $8 members ($32 All-access festival pass) / $10 general admission ($40 All-access festival pass)
